about the company

Mindwax completed several arthouse films including documentaries, experimental features as well as shorts and music videos in the frames of international co-production, focusing not only on their production process, but also on their development, financing, and distribution strategies as well. Our goal is to initiate social and cultural discussions about subjects as femininity, gender, LGBTQ+ issues, cultural heritage or our collective consciousness in both digital and analogue formats.

Since 2013 Mindwax has been producing mainly analogue music videos and short films directed by Peter Strickland for such labels as Mute, Domino, Invada, and for artists like The KVB, Flying Saucer Attack and A Hawk & A Hacksaw.

The biggest success of the team is undoubtedly the experimental short film, GUO4 (2019) which had its world premiere at the 76th Venice Film Festival, then travelled many more festivals including the 63rd BFI London Film Festival, Tallinn Black Nights – PÖFF Shorts or Leeds Film Fest, where it won the Jury’s Special Mention. The film can be watched on MUBI until December 2020.

The latest collaboration with Strickland is Cold Meridian (2020), a b&w short film shot on super8 and 16mm that competed in Zabaltegi-Tabakalera programme of the 68th San Sebastian International Film Festival and is continuing its festival circuit at Calgary International Film Festival, Uppsala Short Film Festival and many more.

Since 2018 Mindwax works with acclaimed Berlinale Critics Week alumni director Péter Lichter. After producing Empty Horses (2019), a found-footage, film historical essay film, Mindwax is also handling the event-based distribution of the film countrywide. The film had its international premiere at the 23rd Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival and then was selected to compete for the Found Footage Award at the 49th International Film Festival Rotterdam. The latest work of the team is The Philosophy of Horror, a seven-segment abstract found footage film is about to have its premiere as a full film – while its first segments already set foot at festivals such as Go Short, goEast or Jihlava.

Mindwax produced various coming-of-age, strong-female-led short films directed by Cristina Grosan. Holiday at the Seaside won the Atlantic Group Award at Sarajevo IFF in 2013 and Best Short Film at Tirana, has been screened at more than 40 festivals and had over 1 million views since its online release.
